American football and the game of fantasy football are two of the most popular sports/games/events in the world. Simply put, every year around this time millions of people huddle around their digital devices in order to construct the ultimate team of football players to take out their opponents, typically winning money in the process. David Johnson, star running back of the Arizona Cardinals, was supposed to be one of the center pieces of most fantasy football teams. As the consensus highest scoring player in the game, his injury in Week 1 was a gut punch to both the Cardinals and his adoring fantasy football fans around the world. As it turns out, David Johnson doesn’t really care about fantasy football.
Arizona’s star back David Johnson was hit with a painful dislocated wrist during the first game of the season, this one against the home town Detroit Lions. While initially his injury was hoped to not be season ending, the final diagnosis turned out to be right on the cuff. Johnson would be hit with a severe wrist dislocation that would sideline him until November at the earliest. Arizona has gone on to lose both of their first games of the season and they’ve looked completely sluggish and lackluster without the man known as DJ on the field for their offense.
Opening up to the media for the first time since his injury, Johnson cleared up a couple of different things while also muddying the water. To start off, Johnson told reporters that he had no clear and definitive return date with his injury. Johnson said, “Just rehab obviously, after the cast and everything. We’ll see what happens.” Johnson’s response shouldn’t shock anybody as players are typically mum about return times from injury as they don’t want to be cast as lazy or motivated if it ends up taking even longer to come back. Now on the injured reserve list, Johnson can come back in Week 10 at the absolute earliest for a Thursday night game against Seattle.
Reporters jokingly prodded at Johnson’s status as an elite fantasy football back but DJ wasn’t taking the bait. Johnson said, “Fantasy is the last thing on my mind right now.” Hopefully Johnson’s focus on rehab can translate into a streamlined recovery. However, if Arizona is out of contention by Week 10 it is possible that their star back will be shut down for the rest of the year.
