Kamaru Usman Wins UFC Title Over Colby Covington

To say there was a lot of bad blood between Colby Covington and Kamaru Usman would be a huge understatement. The two UFC welterweights have been saying some very bad things about each other for a very long time. They were finally able to settle their differences in the cage last Saturday night with the UFC welterweight title on the line. According to okayafrica.com, the fight lived up to all of the hype surrounding it. Usman wound up getting a TKO victory very late in the fifth and final round. Colby protested the stoppage. It is hard to argue that the fight was stopped too soon. Colby had broken his jaw. Therefore, the fact that he was still fighting at all was quite impressive.

The fight puts an end to the months of insults that the two fighters hurled at each other on social media and at various press conferences promoting the fight. Usman showed that he is just a little bit better than Colby at the present time. It is going to be a long time until we see Colby in the cage. He has been medically suspended for six months to give his jaw time to heal. However, he could have that medical suspension lifted if a doctor clears him to fight.

Usman is already getting called out by Leon Edwards. The British welterweight contender said that he is not impressed with Usman’s performance. He believes that he should have the next crack at the title. It is not known if the UFC agrees with him or not. There are a few other ways that the UFC could decide to go regarding Usman’s next title defense. For example, he could do a rematch with Tyron Woodley who he dominated earlier this year. It is also very possible that Jorge Masvidal could get thrown into the mix. There are many people who believe that Masvidal deserves a shot at the title with everything that he has done so far this year.

Kamaru Usman deserves a lot of credit. He ignored the mind games being played by Colby Covington prior to the fight. He was all business when he stepped into the cage. He took apart Covington and was dominant for the entire fight. There judges saw it as a close fight. However, Usman took it out of the judges hands by getting a finish in the final round. He has the heart of a true champion.
