There are few fights in the UFC that fans wanted to see more than Jorge Masvidal vs. Nate Diaz. For a very long time, it appeared like that fight was only a pipe dream. This was because Nate did not fight at all for three years after his epic decision loss to Conor McGregor that became the biggest selling fight in UFC history at that time. His very honest and direct persona has made Diaz a fan favorite during his time as a fighter. The same can be said for Masvidal. This is why people have always wanted to see these two guys mix it up inside the cage.
It was recently announced that Diaz would face Masvidal as the main event of the UFC event at Madison Square Garden on November 2. Needless to say, there is already a lot of buzz from fight fans concerning this event. One of the biggest reasons why mixed martial arts fans like Diaz and Masvidal is the fact that they do not pretend to be something they are not. Fighters like Henry Cejudo and Colby Covington have been criticized for playing characters that would be better suited for the WWE.
The fight between Diaz and Masvidal had been rumored for a very long time. It came to fruition when a deal to have Colby fight Kamaru Usman was not able to be worked out. This was expected to be the headlining fight at the Madison Square Garden event. However, the UFC did not have a lot of time to waste negotiating with Colby and Usman. They have less than two months until the event. Therefore, they needed to get the main event signed because they will need to promote the event prior to November 2.
Nate Diaz has said that he does not need to fight for money. He proved that by sitting out for three years. He came back recently and disposed of Anthony Pettis. Masvidal was able to knock out previously undefeated Ben Askren in only five seconds for the quickest KO in the history of the company. He achieved a great deal of fame from that win. It elevated him to a status that made Diaz want to fight him. It will be a very interesting fight because both guys have very good boxing skills. However, Diaz clearly has the edge on the ground. Therefore, Masvidal will try to prevent any take-downs.
