Jalen Hurts, former standout at Alabama, has garnered a reputation for “making things happen on the ground” during his time with the Philadelphia Eagles. On Sunday night, Hurts rushed for 100 yards during the first quarter of the game versus the Green Bay Packers. Hurts is currently the sole quarterback with more than 100 rushing yards in a single quarter in the last three decades.
This feat brings Hurts close to breaking the current Eagles record for the most rushing yards in a single contest, a record set by Michael Vick in 2010 (Vick garnered the accomplishment by scoring 130 yards in a single quarter.
What’s more surprising is that Hurts isn’t the leading NFL quarterback rusher. Currently, Justin Fields, the playcaller for the Chicago Bears, holds that distinction.
Hurts is known for his ground game as a dual-threat quarterback. On Sunday, Hurts ran the ball for many of those aforementioned rushing yards before handing the ball off to Kenneth Gainwell for a four-yard TD early in the first quarter. Hurts would repeat the performance, the second time handing the ball off to Miles Sanders. As a result of this teamwork, three early touchdowns resulted.
Hurts’ prowess as a dual-threat quarterback was also on display Sunday evening. Hurts would hurl the pigskin at Quez Watkins seconds before the end of the second quarter for yet another touchdown. At the half, the Eagles led the Packers by seven points.
Hurts would lead the Eagles to a 40-33 victory over Green Bay on Sunday. By the end of regulation time, Hurts would break the record for rushing yards by a quarterback. The Eagles also garnered props for becoming the first NFL team to earn a double-digit victory over its opponent.
Legendary Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers would leave the gam with a rib injury.
