Cubs Are Alone in First with Win Over Brewers

A team that got off to a very rocky start in the 2019 season is the Chicago Cubs. They lost a lot of games in April due to very poor pitching and lackluster defense. However, they appear to have turned a corner. They are playing much better lately. They are getting big hits at the right moments. This has resulted in the Cubs winning on a regular basis. They are in the midst of a big series with the Milwaukee Brewers. The Cubs know that every game against the Brewers is worth two games in the standings because they are division rivals.

The Cubs got the best of the Brewers on Saturday. The final score was 2-1. Cole Hamels and Zach Davies matched up in a superb pitching duel. Both of them only allowed a single run during their time in the game. Hamels went seven innings and Davies went six innings. The game eventually went 15 innings with the Cubs winning the game by scoring a run in the bottom of the 15th. It was a thrilling victory that gave the Cubs a record of 23-14. They are now alone in first place in the National League Central division.

The Cubs were thought to be the favorite to win the division at the start of the season. They have more talent on paper than any of their other division rivals. However, they underachieved greatly in April. That is the only thing that prevented the Cubs from taking over first place much earlier in the season. The Brewers have been carried so far in 2019 by Christian Yelich. He won the most valuable player award in the National League last season. He has picked up right where he left off. He is leading all players in home runs. His stats are off the charts. There is no doubt that the Brewers would be in very big trouble if they did not have Yelich in their lineup.

It should be a very tight divisional race between both the Brewers and the Cubs for the remainder of 2019. The Brewers have shown that they are a very gritty team that wins much more than they should for the amount of talent they have. They surprised many baseball experts by playing very well last season. There are some people who expected a big drop off this season. That has not happened as of yet.
