Not many people would have predicted that the Houston Texans and the Indianapolis Colts would have been able to make the playoffs after the beginning of the season. Both teams got off to dreadful starts. The Texans were 0-3 to start the year. This is a hole that only a small handful of teams have been able to climb out of in the history of the NFL. The Colts were in even worse shape. They were 1-5 after their first six games. Only two other teams in NFL history have made the playoffs after starting the year with a record that bad. Those two teams were the 1970 Cincinnati Bengals and the 2016 Kansas City Chiefs.
The Colts were in charge of this game against the Texans from start to finish. They controlled the ball for a large portion of the game. This prevented Houston QB Deshaun Watson and his offense from being able to get on any kind of roll. Andrew Luck performed very well and converted key third downs when he needed to. The Houston crowd was never able to really get into the game because the Texans were not able to get the score close enough. The Colts would eventually be victorious by a score of 21-7.
The Colts will move on to play the Chiefs in Kansas City on Saturday. Andrew Luck will have his work cut out for him trying to call signals in the loudest stadium in the NFL. This is the game that most NFL fans wanted to see. You will be able to watch two talented young quarterbacks like Patrick Mahomes and Andrew Luck squaring off against each other. NFL playoff action does not get any better than this. It remains to be seen if the game will live up to the lofty expectations that fans have for it.
One of the biggest disappointments for the Texans was the performance of superstar JJ Watt. He had won the defensive player of the year award earlier in his career. However, his last three seasons have been plagued with injuries. This was his comeback year. The bad news for Texans fans is that Watt failed to show up in the biggest game of the season. He was not able to make any big plays to help the Texans take over the game. This is not the first bad performance that Watt has had in a playoff game.
