Chuck Liddell Announces a Comeback to MMA

Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell went form a mixed martial arts fighter to an MMA legend. Looks like he intends on becoming a fighter once again. Liddell recently announced his plans to come out of retirement. At 48 years of age, Liddell wouldn’t become the oldest person to set foot in an MMA cage. Still, he would have a tough time competing due to the effects age have on the human body. His ability to recover from training, for example, would be slower. That could inhibit his potential in a competitive bout. Of course, Liddell already knows this and appears up for the challenge. Will a fight promotion take him?

Currently, Liddell wants to book a third fight against former rival Tito Ortiz. Liddell expressed a desire to put a fight together through an affiliation with Oscar de la Hoya. De la Hoya has expressed interest in becoming involved with MMA. Don’t be surprised about the former boxer wishing to promote MMA. MMA does quite well financially when promoted effectively.

If the Ortiz fight doesn’t go through, Liddell says he’ll take a fight with another opponent. Liddell wants to return. No matter where he starts the comeback, the comeback starts.

Finding a promoter willing to take Liddell wouldn’t be too difficult. His strong name value would help sell tickets to arenas and draw television ratings. Even a small promotion could find an internet PPV to be fairly lucrative. The big stage of the UFC might be out of the question for Liddell. If he makes a comeback and wins his first fight in spectacular fashion, a major promotion could be willing to book him for one or two fights. The UFC won’t likely be one of those promotions though.

UFC President Dana White isn’t keen on the idea of Chuck Liddell fighting Ortiz or anyone else. White, essentially, pressed Liddell to retire after the fighter suffered three knockout losses. White felt Liddell’s health would be in jeopardy if he continued to take fights.

Liddell seems willing to take a risk. He’s serious about making a comeback.
