Cardinals Rout Rockies in Battle of Contenders

The National League has some very exciting divisional races this year. There are many teams that have a chance to make the playoffs with only five weeks left in the season. The St. Louis Cardinals are trailing the Chicago Cubs in the Central division. The Milwaukee Brewers also have a good chance of getting into the playoffs. These three teams have been battling each other all year. The Cubs were picked by most of the experts to win their division. However, the Cardinals might throw a monkey wrench into those plans.

The Colorado Rockies are a team that was not expected to do very much this year. They have a few good players. However, their overall depth is not quite at the level of a playoff team. However, the Rockies have exceeded expectations. They are locked in a very tight race with the Los Angeles Dodgers and the Arizona Diamondbacks for the American League West division. The Rockies have continued their trend of being very bad on the road. They will need to start playing better on the road if they are going to overcome their competitors and win the division. This is a difficult thing to do because the thin air in Denver makes it much easier to hit than other places. Therefore, players for the Rockies find it hard to adjust when they go on the road.

The Cardinals had a very easy win on Sunday afternoon at Coors Field in Denver. They routed the Rockies by a score of 12-3. Rockies starter Tyler Anderson got hammered for six earned runs on seven hits. He did not make it out of the first inning. Tyler O’Neill had the big blow in the first inning when he cracked a three-run homer.

Neither the Cardinals or the Rockies made any big moves at the trade deadline. This upset the fans of both teams who thought the management should have made a better effort to improve for the stretch drive. However, both teams are in the thick of the playoff hunt despite the lack of trades. It remains to be seen how each club will handle the pressure of playing meaningful games in September. There are not a lot of players on either team who have been in that position before. The Cardinals and the Rockies each want to win their respective division. They do not want to be a wild card team.
