Why Is Boxing Declining?
For the last decade boxing has been on the decline. There has been a number of factors contributing to that. Since the beginning of the sport, boxing has always been all about the heavyweight division. There has not been an exciting heavyweight champion since late 90’s early 2000’s when Mike Tyson was around. After the retirement of Lennox Lewis in 2004, the heavyweight devision was officially dead. Another contributing fact was the rise of MMA during the early 2000’s with the UFC and Pride Bushido. MMA with perfect timing has filled in the gap of those boxing fans like myself who are looking for an exciting fighting event.
Entertainment
Mike Tyson was a head hunter who tried to knock every opponent out within the first round and that’s entertaining. Nobody wants to watch a boxing fight going back and forth or hide behind the jab for 12 rounds. I must say that during the time where Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao were fighting boxing felt alive again. Now that those fights are over, us boxing fans see ourselves with no exciting fights to look forward and no heavyweight fighters. Looking back you knew something was wrong when lightweight boxing was getting so much attention.
Future Of Boxing
Now the question is, will boxing make a come back? nobody knows. It all depends whether new exciting heavyweight contenders come around. It might be all too late by the time we see this happen with a new generation of MMA fans. Looking at history there has always been a good heavyweight champion who eventually passes the torch to a new heavyweight champion. Where we stand now we don’t have a good heavyweight champion and nobody in sight to take the torch. Time will only tell and us true boxing fans only hope that boxing does make a comeback. If we have any true boxing fans out there share your opinion.
