Ryan Newman was involved in a horrific crash on the last lap of the Daytona 500. The crash was a reminder of one that occurred in 2001 that claimed the life of Dale Earnhardt, Sr. The crash wasn’t the first one for Newman, but it was certainly one of the most frightening for him, his family, and fans. After Newman lost control of his car on the track, he slammed into the safety barrier before sliding back down across the track. He was then hit on the side of his car, denting the door and the roll cage that protected his head. His car then flipped over several times, finally stopping on near pit road.
While Denny Hamlin was crossing the finish line to his Daytona 500 win, crew members and safety teams worked to put out a small fire underneath Newman’s car before trying to get him out as quickly as possible. As they worked to get him out of the car, they asked members of the media to leave the scene. They also put black screens up around Newman’s car to keep fans and others from viewing the carnage of the car and the process of getting Newman out.
As soon as Newman was out of his car, he was quickly taken by ambulance to a hospital near the speedway. Fans speculated about his condition because of images that were released soon after the crash and because no one seemed to be talking about his condition. Some even feared that he had lost his life. Less than 48 hours after his crash, Newman was talking to his children and family as well as the doctors at the hospital. According to standard.co.uk, he was released from the hospital only two days after the frightening crash that could have taken his life and walked through the hospital door while holding the hands of his children.
