When Donald Trump won the election, he bragged about having generals in his administration. Trump painted himself as a staunch military supporter who would protect the country from caravans of poor immigrants who try to escape from the violence in their countries. But after two years in office the generals aren’t running around the White House trying to head off another Trump “gut” decision. Trump got rid of all of them.
General John Kelly, a respected Marine General and Trump’s former chief of staff tried to stop Trump from pulling all the troops out of Afghanistan in 2018. Kelly claims that is one of his finest moments as a Trump advisor. Trump changed his mind about an Afghanistan withdrawal after talking to Kelly. But the president recently announced he’s bringing half of the American forces home in 2019 now that Kelly left the building. But a Pentagon spokesman told the press the president hasn’t given that order yet.
Kelly has a lot of regrets after serving the president. He doesn’t regret taking the job, but he does regret Trump’s management style. Instead of consulting with knowledgeable advisors before he makes a decision, Trump asks his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner for advice, according to General Kelly. Kelly relationship with Ivanka and Kushner wasn’t friendly or business like to put it mildly. Kushner and Ivanka tried to undermine Kelly whenever they got the chance. Trump eventually stopped talking to Kelly. Instead of seeking his advice before making crucial decisions, the president went around Mr. Kelly.
According to the Washington Post, Kelly blamed former Attorney General Jeff Sessions for separating families at the border. Mr. Sessions didn’t tell the White House before he enacted a zero-tolerance border policy. Mr. Sessions, a former Alabama Senator, is one of those closet racists who believe there’s no room for diversity in America.
Trump didn’t miss a beat when he let the country know Kelly got his “Your fired” tweet notice. The president praised Kelly in public but in private Trump said Kelly was a liability. In a Los Angeles Times interview, Mr. Kelly said anyone who is not a “yes man” in Trump’s administration is a liability in Trump’s eyes.
The LA Times reporter asked Kelly why he didn’t quit sooner. Kelly held that position for 18 months. Kelly said military men don’t walk away from a battle.
