Zoey Deutch Joins Zombieland Sequel

The cast of Zombieland 2 just got a little bit bigger. Deadline Hollywood is reporting that actress Zoey Deutch is joining the long-awaited sequel in a currently unnamed role. Deutch is the first new actor to join the installment, which will also include the stars of the original, including Jesse Eisenberg, Emma Stone, Woody Harrelson, Abigail Breslin. While not much is known about Deutch’s character, those close to the production say she will be portraying a love interest of Eisenberg’s Columbus. Deutch herself is no stranger to horror films, having starred in the 2014 horror-comedy Vampire Academy. The actress has since confirmed the casting through Instagram, telling fans that she’s “very excited to join the apocalypse.”

The original Zombieland was the sleeper hit of the 2009 Halloween season. Since its release, the film has become a cult classic, catapulting its stars to fame. Rumors of a sequel abounded until early last year, when producers confirmed that the writing and creative team behind the original was set to return for a new installment. In addition to stars Eisenberg, Stone, Harrelson, and Breslin, director Ruben Fleischer and scribes Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese are also onboard for Zombieland 2. Original producer Gavin Palone is also returning for the sequel, which is being distributed by Columbia Pictures. The sequel’s release date is scheduled for October 11, 2019, almost 10 years to the day of the original Zombieland’s release date of October 2, 2009.

While not much is known about Zombieland 2’s plot, a brief synopsis provided by Wernick and Reese gives a few interesting tidbits to tide fans over until next October. Like the original, Zombieland 2 will be focused on comic mayhem, taking Columbus, Wichita, Tallahassee, and Little Rock from the halls of the White House to the nation’s heartland. Along the way, the group must face a new threat in the form of super zombies. An evolved species of regular zombies, super zombies travel as a horde from city to city and are nearly impossible to kill. Additionally, the group must contend with other groups of survivors as they face the growing pains of their unconventional family.
