A new trailer has dropped for Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay, an upcoming entry into Warner Bros.’s DC Universe Animated Original Movies franchise.
Before now, not much was known about this particular film. It will obviously include the Suicide Squad, a rotating team made up mostly of captured supervillains who jobs for the government in exchange for decreased prison sentences; these are usually dangerous or morally questionable. The movie will apparently be an original story rather than an adaptation of any particular arc from the comics, and it will be set in the DC Animated Movie Universe, which is loosely based on the New 52.
With the trailer, we have more of an idea of the plot. The team here is made up of perennial favorites Harley Quinn (Tara Strong) and Deadshot (Christian Slater), as well as icy villainess Killer Frost (Kristin Bauer van Straten), martial artist Bronze Tiger (Billy Brown), snake-like Copperhead (Gideon Emery) and snarky Captain Boomerang (Liam McIntyre).
According to an official synopsis, we will see them go up against a variety of different foes in search of a magical item, but according to the trailer, the big bad will be Vandal Savage (Jim Pirri), an immortal mastermind and one of the main antagonists of the DC Universe. As always, they will be overseen by the powerless but iron-willed government agent Amanda Waller (Vanessa Williams) (who, for those wondering, has her “younger and thinner” look from the New 52).
A different entry in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies franchise, Batman: Assault on Arkham, also focused on the Suicide Squad; in that film, set in the same universe as the Arkham series of video games, the team (with a few different members) had to break into the titular insane asylum, only for Batman and the Joker to throw some wrenches into their plans. There was also, of course, the 2016 Suicide Squad movie in the DC Extended Universe, where one member tries to destroy the world and has to be stopped by the rest of the team. This movie will not be directly connected to either of those, but hopefully will retain their sense of insane, dark humor.
There is no release date for Suicide Squad: Hell to Pay yet, but it is expected to come out sometime in the spring.
