Rian Johnson has been approved for his own trilogy of Star Wars films, and according to his producing partner, Ram Bergman, it could begin to come out as soon as two years from now.
Bergman made these comments in an interview with From the Grapevine, which asked him about the films’ schedule.
“I can’t tell you because we don’t know yet,” he said. “Maybe in two years; it’s just in the early stages.”
This would be something of a surprise, as virtually nothing about the movies are known yet, and a Star Wars flick takes quite some time to produce. “Early stages” would seem to imply that Johnson is still planning things out, and he has said that he wants to know the trajectory of his story well before he begins making them.
That said, it makes some sense that Disney and Lucasfilm would want the movies ready by 2020. Since Star Wars: The Force Awakens came out in 2015, the franchise has produced one film every year; we have already had this year’s entry, Solo: A Star Wars Movie, last month, while the currently untitled “Episode IX” will be coming out on December 20, 2019. That leaves 2020 without any cinematic trip to the galaxy far, far away.
That said, Indiana Jones 5 is coming out that year, which is another big tent-pole for Lucasfilm to focus on. It may be prudent to wait for 2021 or later anyway; as Solo has arguably demonstrated, trying to stick to a certain release date can be the enemy of making a truly great film.
And as it is, Johnson in particular will want to tread lightly. He was the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which proved very controversial among fans; many felt that it strayed too far from what makes the franchise great, and will thus be leery of giving him three more movies. Hopefully he can find a balance that both his supporters and critics will find appealing.
Bergman’s comments do seem to confirm that the trilogy is happening, despite theories that Solo‘s failure could lead to a shake-up at Lucasfilm. He also reiterated previous comments that the film would focus on new characters, thus continuing to move the franchise away from the saga of the Skywalker family.
