Fans of J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World were left scratching their heads after several big reveals in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, the latest entry in the series. In the film’s final scene, the mysterious Credence Barebone decides to ally himself with the dark wizard Grindelwald, played by legendary actor Johnny Depp. Taking place at Grindelwald’s castle of Nurmengard, Grindelwald reveals that Credence is actually Aurelius Dumbledore, brother of the famous wizard Albus Dumbledore. To prove this, Grindelwald shows Credence that the baby bird he has been taking care of is actually a phoenix, a species of bird associated with the Dumbledore family.

Fans of the franchise have been left to wonder how Aurelius can be a Dumbledore. In 2007’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Rowling revealed through flashbacks that Albus Dumbledore only had two siblings: a brother named Aberforth and a sister named Ariana. Fans have pointed out that the timeline created by the film precludes Albus and Aurelius from having the same parents, as actor Ezra Miller has said that Aurelius was born in 1908. Since Albus’s father died in 1890 and his mother died in 1899, the two cannot be related. However, many fans argue that Miller might be incorrect and Aurelius far older than the actor told reporters. These theories revolve around Aberforth telling Harry and his friends in Deathly Hallows that their mother taught the Dumbledore children “secrets and lies.” As a secretive individual, Dumbledore’s mother could have had an affair and shipped Aurelius off to New York to avoid the shame attached to having an illegitimate child. Other fans argue that Grindelwald is manipulating Aurelius and lying to him. These theories point out that since Albus and Grindelwald have a blood bond that prevents one from harming the other, the dark wizard is using Aurelius as a weapon against Albus before he can become a bigger threat.

Professor McGonagall’s role in Crimes of Grindelwald has also caught fans by surprise. Many fans argue that McGonagall’s presence in the film is a major plot hole. In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, McGonagall reveals that she has been a Hogwarts professor since 1956, however, the character is shown to teach at the school in Crimes of Grindelwald, which takes place in 1927. Fans remain hopeful that Rowling will respond to some of the confusion generated by the film through Twitter, as the author frequently likes to communicate with fans through the platform.
