Horror movie fans are having a great summer, thanks to a few notable releases. It, the recent remake of a Stephen King classic, is currently seeing some of Summer’s highest ticket sales. There is a new horror film, Mother, that many thought would gain a nice share of movie ticket sales. Unfortunately, CinemaScore audiences are not giving Mother a passing grade.

CinemaScore is a polling system used in many movie theaters. The goal of CinemaScore is to find out how audience members felt about seeing a recent film. CinemaScore’s grading is done through a letter system where an A is the best and an F is the worst. Mother currently has an F rating through CinemaScore. It’s interesting to note that Mother currently has a 68 on the film website Rotten Tomatoes. Many are wondering why the critics and fans reaction for Mother are so far apart from each other. Mother is a film known for its twists and turns. Certain audience members may have felt they’ve watched a film that they hadn’t planned on seeing, a reason for the low CinemaScore numbers.

Darren Aronofsky, the film’s creator, has been known to make mysterious movies. The previews for Mother were made to leave viewers in a state of confusion. Many trailers for this film are short tidbits that never really explain what’s happening. Mother would first be seen at film festivals throughout the world. Many were unprepared for how underwhelming Mother’s opening weekend became. Some felt that Mother would succeed based on the star power of its actors. This film stars Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfieffer, and Jennifer Lawrence. The Hollywood Reporter finds that Mother’s opening is now the worst launch of Lawrence’s entire career.

In summary, Mother has received an F rating from CinemaScore. It appeared that Mother would continue the string of successes horror movies have had at the box office. Unfortunately, Mother opened to extremely low numbers and audience reviews aren’t helping matters. It’s important to note that critics seem to generally be pleased with Mother, it’s earned a 68 at Rotten Tomatoes. Another horror film, It, is currently holding the top spot on box office charts. It remains to be seen whether Mother will gain more leverage at the box office.
