It seems that Disney is going back to their classic catalog of movies once again to find ideas for new films. Over the past few years, the studio has made new live-action versions of their animated films like “Beauty and the Beast” and others. It has now been announced that “Peter Pan” will get the live-action treatment. This is not surprising. It appears that Disney is intent on remaking every animated film they have ever done into a live-action version. It was first reported that the new “Peter Pan” film would only be available on the new Disney+ streaming service. However, new reports indicate that it will also be shown in theaters.
The production of the live-action “Peter Pan” is moving along at a very good pace. In a report by ew.com, the actors who will be playing Peter and Wendy were just announced. However, the release date for the film is still not known. There have been a few changes in the live-action remakes that Disney has done compared to their animated predecessors. For example, the infamous crow scene in “Dumbo” was removed in the live-action version. Disney has not said if they will be changing anything in the new “Peter Pan” film. There is nothing in the film that modern audiences would find offensive. Therefore, it would be surprising if anything were to be changed.
Disney’s insistence on remaking their old animated films might be the result of some failures they had in the recent past when they attempted some new ideas. For example, the 2012 “John Carter” film was a huge box office bomb. Disney lost millions of dollars on that movie. Failures like this have caused Disney to green light much safer projects that already have an audience. However, they will reach a point where they do not have any animated films left to remake.
The live-action version of “Aladdin” made over $1 billion last year. The same can be said for “The Lion King” live-action remake. This massive amount of money has made Disney want to keep churning out these remakes as long as audiences around the world are willing to pay to see them. It will be very interesting to see how a new “Peter Pan” film does with today’s audiences. The budget of the film has not been revealed. However, Disney has been spending a considerable amount of money on their remake projects. This film should be no different.
