A new trailer has been released for Ant-Man & the Wasp, setting the stage for a smaller but still impressive film in the wake of Avengers: Infinity War‘s amazing success.
Both title characters were missing from the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest epic, though given that it had 80 other characters to juggle, you could be forgiven for having not noticed their absence. In this film, actually set before Thanos arrives on Earth but after the events of Captain America: Civil War, we will find out what Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) and Hope van Dyne/the Wasp (Evangeline Lilly) have been up to.
The trailer opens with Scott talking to his daughter Cassie (played by Abby Ryder Fortson) about his career as Ant-Man, intercut with scenes of him fighting crime. We see some great use of his size-changing abilities, while Cassie seems pleased to learn that he will now be partnering with Hope. (Looking for a stepmom, Cassie?)
We already knew that the movie will involve the Quantum Realm, where Hope’s mother, the former Wasp Janet (Michelle Pfeiffer), disappeared years ago. The trailer only hints at that, though, focusing more on adventures in the normal world, with even more fun size-changing action as the heroes get bigger and smaller to suit their needs.
As a new hero, Hope gets a bit of extra focuses on the fight scenes, which are impressively done. We also see that, as skilled as Scott is at thinking on his feet, she can be a bit more practical than he is, as in one scene when she needs to remind him that she can fly and he can’t.
We also see a bit more of the Ghost, a new villain who is being played by Hannah John-Kamen. Using her own special suit, she is able to go through walls and will, apparently, gain access to the Quantum Realm herself. What this means for our heroes, as well as Janet, remains to be seen.
The end of the trailer also introduces Laurence Fishburne as Bill Foster, who worked with Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) on a project called “Goliath.” (In the comic books, Bill is a hero called Black Goliath.) In an amusing scene, he and Scott compare how big they have managed to get using Pym’s tech. “If you two are finished comparing sizes,” Hope quips.
