The new exercise program — called “Hip-Hop Yoga” — has been trending in the recent years. It was created by DJ Khaled and Eddie Murphy. It combines the relaxation benefits of yoga with the upbeat tempo of popular Hip Hop music. For example, there is a sequence of poses that ends in a downward dog position while fans shout out the latest hit single by Jay Z or Beyoncé. Some patrons say they enjoy exercising while listening to hip hop music as a way of getting motivated. Other patrons say it provides them with a good excuse not to go home after work on Fridays.
From pop-lock moves to headlocks, Hip-Hop Yoga provides a fun way to get in shape. This new form of exercise is designed to improve rhythm and agility while providing cardio benefits. By incorporating hip hop dance moves with yoga poses, Hip-Hop Yoga combines elements from your favorite dance clubs with traditional stretches and poses.
According to one of the co-founders, “Hip hop yoga is a workout that will challenge both your body and your mind. It uses elements of hip hop dance such as popping, locking and breaking.” Exercise sessions are set to music most often associated with street dancing, from Beyoncé classics to current hits. This form of exercise has grown in popularity over recent years due to its focus on longer poses and slower movements compared to other forms of yoga.
