Suggesting a “good night’s sleep” isn’t a new health tip. The suggestion to get a proper amount of rest pushes probably has existed since the dawn of time. A lengthy history doesn’t automatically mean the advice ends up embraced. Men who don’t take the advice may be setting themselves up for greater problems than feeling overly sluggish during the day. New research indicates a lack of sleep could contribute to the onset of diabetes.
Recent studies seem to indicate that a lack of sleep may lead to hormonal issues related to insulin resistance. Insulin resistance factors into the potential onset of type 2 diabetes. Based on research studies, a broader understanding of this relationship has emerged. Sleep deficiency in men may lead to a hormonal imbalance between testosterone and cortisol.
The study involved 34 men and was conducted in California through funding provided by the National Institutes of Health and the Clinical and Translational Research Center at LA BioMed. In short, the study maintains a high level of credibility. The average male probably won’t look closely at all the particulars related to the study. He should, however, take the results of the study seriously and look for ways to address sleep deficiencies.
The reasons for a lack of sleep can vary. One person could be working a lot of others. Another person may be dealing with an underlying medical issue that contributes to improper sleeping patterns. Stress could undermine the desire to sleep well. Regardless of the reason, the end result is the same. Sleep turns out to be insufficient. As a result, a man’s overall health could be at risk.
The news of this study should give most men pause for thought. Anyone suffering from issues related to poor sleep may find it beneficial to undergo a medical examination. A full physical could reveal problems that otherwise remained unknown.
