Marijuana should not be legalized for a number of reasons. First and foremost, marijuana is a gateway drug that can lead to more dangerous addictions. Second, marijuana has been shown to have adverse effects on the brain, including reducing cognitive function. Finally, marijuana is not safe; it can cause accidents and lead to health problems.

1) It is highly addictive.

Marijuana is addictive. Studies have shown that 9% of people who use marijuana will become addicted. This number increases to 17% when the drug is used frequently. Those addicted to marijuana find it extremely difficult to quit, often requiring professional help. The withdrawal symptoms can be severe, causing depression and other problems that can lead the individual to return to using marijuana (or another addictive substance).

2) Impairs Brain Function.

Studies have shown that marijuana can reduce cognitive function. One study showed that long-term marijuana smokers had lower IQs than those who did not smoke. A second study demonstrated that marijuana decreased the ability to learn and recall information. The same study demonstrated that the THC in marijuana could keep the user from learning, increasing the risks of accidents on the road.

3) Increases Accidents and Health Problems.

Marijuana can cause accidents leading to health problems. One study showed that marijuana caused accidents seven times more often than alcohol. Another study showed that marijuana smokers are more likely to suffer from bronchitis and lung cancer. There are also serious problems in over-exposure, including panic attacks and hallucinations, which can lead to violent behavior.

4) Affects physical health.

Marijuana can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer and a permanent decrease in brain function. A certain percentage of people who use marijuana will have a mental illness. Also, marijuana has been shown to cause a temporary reduction in sperm count, resulting in reproductive problems.

5) It Costs the economy $13 billion annually.

Marijuana is the fourth most popular recreational drug after alcohol, nicotine, and caffeine. The number of people arrested for marijuana use has increased 300% since 1980 (from 688,000 to 4.5 million). In addition to prison sentences for those convicted, there are also costs for law enforcement, prosecution, and legal aid. The court system can also handle cases such as driving under the influence.

5) Marijuana is not safe.

Despite claims by the proponents of legalized marijuana, it is not safe to use. Studies have shown that marijuana can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer and a permanent decrease in brain function and causing mental illness among some users.
