With the un-numbered sequel to “God of War” due to release in less than a month away, Sony took the opportunity to elevate interest in its PlayStation 4-exclusive release. Notably, God of War marks the return of the franchise’s presence on Sony gaming consoles after half a decade. As the first leg of Sony’s intent to massively promote the game’s release, it announced a special bundle for the PS4 Pro console that includes a specially designed machine and controller.
This exclusive PS4 Pro variant is a mixture of silver and gray with yellow and dark gray accents. The console’s top depicts the various icons within skill tree used for Kratos’ new signature weapon, the Leviathan Axe. The front of the machine is littered with runes signifying the different worlds that Kratos and his son will visit within the game. The bundle’s corresponding controller goes for a simpler design than the console but features the Huldra Brothers maker’s mark on its right grip, the same icon that can be seen on the Leviathan Axe, and its centralized touchpad features the franchise logo.
Both the system, a machine that is mechanically identical to the 1 TB version of the PS4 Pro, and its controller are included in the limited edition bundle. Further, the bundle includes a physical copy of the game with “digital content” and will release on the same day as the game itself, April 20, to the tune of $400 American, the same market price as a standard model PS4 Pro. While the bundle will launch beyond the North American and Canadian markets, the price point has yet to be declared.
God of War is the first new release in the series since God of War: Ascension on the PlayStation 3. This title also differs from its predecessors by focusing on the Norse pantheon instead of the Greek pantheon. Even further distinguishing this God of War title from its forebears would be the issue of fatherhood; Kratos will be adventuring with Atres, his demigod son who does not entirely seem to understand his divine heritage. Beyond the base version of God of War, several pricier special editions are planned; anyone looking to buy those alternative versions will be doing so without the exclusive PS4 Pro bundle. While the God of War series has revolved around Kratos’ campaign of deicide, the Norse pantheons has several deities associated with death and war.
