In our modern digital age, it isn’t surprising that video games are becoming just as popular as some professional sports. There are professional gamers who can create incredible careers out of competitive gaming and streaming online. There are few games in the history of competitive gaming that have taken off as quickly as Fortnite. Fortnite is a last man standing type of battle game. You can either drop into a map solo or with a team of friends. If you are the best strategist and marksman on the map, you are going to be the winner and have all the bragging rights awarded to you.
According to USA Today, this game’s popularity has been attributed to its non-exclusive console release. If you own a PS4, Xbox One, or PC, you can play the game. Another reason this game is so popular is the fact that it is free to download just like Leauge of Legends. This makes it very easy for many different users to enjoy this game. In February alone, there were reportedly 3.4 million users who were playing this popular game. There have most likely been very many more users on this game since that stat was gathered.
Professional athletes from all different sports have been showing their love of the game on and off the field. Red Sox star Xander Bogearts was seen celebrating at opening day with a gesture that is used in Fortnite. This obviously shows that he plays Fortnite and enjoys it. Twitch streamer and professional gamer Ninja was recently streaming a Fortnite game with rap star Drake and Steelers wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster. JuJu Smith-Schuster went as far as to say that this experience of streaming with Drake and Ninja was better than scoring a touchdown.
Lakers guard Josh Hart had recently said that he had played 10 hours straight of Fortnite before a game with his team. He said that his victory in Fortnite was just as exciting if not more than winning with the Lakers. Gordon Heyward is getting into the Fortnite spirit as well. During a stream, he showed that he had the skills to make the shots that experienced gamers were even very impressed with.
It is interesting to see a video game becoming so popular with professional athletes. While some would think that they would rather be playing golf or doing some other physical activity like surfing to relax, it seems as though they are content to play with their friends and fans online.
