While Amazon and eBay have become popular shopping destinations, people weren’t always able to shop online. Before the internet became frequently utilized for shopping, most people would have to visit a retail store in-person. That being said, the Wal-Mart company is one of the most well-known retail stores throughout the United States. Considering that, it now appears that Wal-Mart is placing a heavy emphasis on how this company works with technology.
Wal-Mart began this plan to focus more on technology during the latter part of 2017. It was during this time when Wal-Mart began construction on an 8,000 square-foot tech incubator in Austin, Texas. While this newest incubator isn’t at large, Wal-Mart is hopeful that this location will help them to continue to innovate in the world of retail. This new tech incubator will be opening in Plano, Texas. Arkansas Online reports that each of these buildings will be housing anywhere between 50-60 employees.
According to retailleader.com, this massive retail company feels that having offices in Plano also benefit from being in close proximity to Bentonville, Arkansas. For those unaware, Bentonville is the city in which Wal-Mart headquarters are located. Therefore, having offices in both Texas and Arkansas enables workers to quickly travel between these two destinations.
To summarize, Wal-Mart recently announced that it will continue tech operations in Texas with the opening of a second tech hub. Many within the tech industry feel that these are wise moves for Wal-Mart, especially if the company is trying to attract students from nearby campuses. In addition to the two technology hubs, Wal-Mart is also placing office space near the University of Dallas. The group of workers at the Plano tech hub will be working on matters relating to helping Wal-Mart with matters including detecting spills faster, saving energy, and using machines to help automate store settings.
