Your food probably contains more ingredients than you bargained for. Things like maggots, mold and insects might be just a few of the hidden items in your favorite dishes. What’s even more surprising is that it’s legal. The FDA does have standards that are supposed to keep the amount of these disgusting ingredients down to a minimum. Here’s what you can expect to find in some of the things that you eat and drink.

Coffee
Many of us love a cup of coffee in the morning. Unfortunately, there might be more in your cup of joe than just cream and sugar. It’s not uncommon for there to be about 10 milligrams of insect feces in a pound of coffee.

Peanut Butter And Jelly
If you didn’t purchase crunchy peanut butter but still find the consistency isn’t perfectly smooth, you may be surprised to find out why. In 3.5 ounces of peanut butter, the FDA allows about 30 fragments of insects. Rodent hairs are also commonly found. Jelly is even worse. About 3 ½ ounces of jelly can contain up to an equivalent of five insect carcasses and four rodent hairs.

Raisins
This snack may seem healthy, but there are some disgusting ingredients in it. An eight ounce serving of raisins can contain at least 10 insects and 35 eggs from a fruit fly. If you are trying to limit your insect intake, opt for a mini box of raisins. They are only about an ounce each and usually only contain the fragments of one insect and four fruit fly eggs.

Spaghetti
Who doesn’t love a plate of spaghetti for dinner? Unfortunately, you may like it less when you find out what’s actully in it. A box of spaghetti can contain nine mice or rat hairs and 450 insect fragments. If you are like most people and top your pasta with sauce, you can take comfort in the fact that the FDA only allows two maggots per 16 ounce container of sauce.

While there may be a lot of disgusting ingredients in your favorite foods, there is really nothing that you can do about it. You’ve been eating things like insects and rodent hairs for years and never knew about it. Fortunately, the FDA does closely monitor food production to make sure that the food you find in your local grocers is safe even though it may contain a few unwanted ingredients.
