Many people remember when the mobile phone began to rapidly increase in terms of popularity. Before Apple and Android made some of the world’s most popular smartphones, many companies were manufacturing and selling flip phones. Considering that, it appears that a few companies are working hard to re-imagine this technology by creating foldable phones.
The Appeal of Foldable Phones
In the past, most flip phones unfolded to present a number pad on the bottom of this device and a screen taking up the top half. However, foldable phones focus more on having a screen that folds in and out. This is beneficial for those wanting to have a tablet-sized screen while still being able to put their phones back into their pockets.
The Major Drawback of These Devices
While a foldable phone might sound great, many people are reporting problems with these devices. One of the most talked-about problems has to do with the hinges of these foldable screens. Unfortunately, certain hinges can break rather easily.
How Much Do These Smartphones Cost?
If you’re wanting to enjoy this experience, be prepared to spend quite a lot of money. The New York Times reports that Samsung’s Galaxy Z retails for $1,380 and Lenovo’s Motorola Razr will cost about $1,500. This is another factor that many people feel will hurt the sales of these smartphones. Many smartphones only cost a few hundred dollars. It’s even possible to find smartphones for much less by taking advantage of deals going on on an almost constant basis.
To summarize, it appears that several companies are placing quite a lot of stake into developing and selling foldable phones. With that said, experts seem to have mixed opinions about these devices. Foldable phones will certainly face lots of competitors, many of whom carry a much lower price-tag. However, only time will tell whether or not foldable phones become the next big thing in the smartphone industry.
