It turns out this elderly couple sitting with team Federer at the Australian open are the parents of Federer’s first international coach, the Aussie Peter Carter. They are named Bob and Diana Carter. Coach Carter met Federer when he was only nine years old in Switzerland. The Australian coach is widely credited as to the one who took Federer from his hometown of Basel, Switzerland and onto the world stage of tennis.

Coach Peter Carter was said to have realized Federer’s incredible tennis talent at a very early age and helped him become the dominant player he is today. The coach is said to have been determined to make Federer one of the world’s best players, and it seems that he succeeded. Unfortunately, tragedy struck in 2002. The coach got into a car crash while on vacation and died. He was 37 years old.

The news of the death of Federer’s coach had such an impact on him that it was said that the then 21-year-old Federer ran through the streets of Toronto and screamed. Federer was playing a tournament in Toronto when he heard the news that Coach Carter had died.
