Taos Hum – Undetermined Noise

In northern New Mexico there is a small laid back town called Taos. This small community who enjoys art and town celebrations has been terrorized by an unknown persistent low-frequency hum. The hum was first reported by some residents during the 1900’s. It has been described as a distant diesel engine, rumbling sound and a pulsating buzz. Many have filed complaints that besides the hum being annoying it causes insomnia, dizziness, pressure on the ears, headaches and even nosebleeds. The complaints eventually reached Congress and a full investigation was conducted. Despite the extensive efforts the investigation came back as inconclusive.

Further Research And Theories

Professor Joe Mullins from the University of Engineering of New Mexico conducted a research on the Taos hum. A survey concluded that out of 1440 residents only 2% were hearers of the hum. Sensitive sound equipment was placed on the homes of these hearers for several days. After measuring low frequency sounds and vibrations nothing unusual was recorded. The research was unable to provide any evidence of the hum. Based on the survey they were able to determine that the hum could be heard outside of Taos. Desperate to provide some answers many have blamed the hum on mechanical devices, government experiments, UFO bases, psychological and even paranormal. This annoying hum remains an unsolved mystery. The hum can still be heard by Taos residents to this day.
