Singer Demi Lovato was rushed to the hospital on Tuesday morning for what was initially reported as a heroin overdose. However, that initial report has been retracted by TMZ as a source close to the singer told People that the overdose wasn’t due to heroin. As of right now, it’s unknown what substance Lovato overdosed on. However, Demi’s friends were prepared for a situation like this due to her recent drug use, and it seems to have saved her life.
A report from People on Wednesday (July 25) indicates that Lovato and some friends had been on an “all-night binger” the night before her hospitalization. An inside source alos told People, “They keep Narcan on hand for such situations – they were prepared for this. The people she has been hanging around lately aren’t her real friends – they don’t have her best interests at heart. She’s pushed her true friends away.”
Both the Los Angeles Fire Department and Police Department responded to the “medical emergency” in the area where Lovato’s Hollywood Hills’ home is located. TMZ had audio of the emergency call on their website which indicated that Lovato was found unconscious when the paramedics arrived. Two friends were with her at the time. A report from Yahoo Lifestyle says that Lovato’s friends were able to save the singer’s life with the use of the Narcan they had available.
Narcan is a brand name for Naloxone, a drug available in a number of state’s pharmacies without a prescription. The drug is used to reverse and block the effects of opioids from narcotic drugs. These aspects often include slowed heart rate and breathing which in effect rob the brain of the oxygen it needs. The Narcan works by binding to an individual’s opioid receptors and counteracting the harmful aspects of the drugs. Lovato’s friends seemed to be prepared for a rough incident of this nature.
Lovato’s overdose may have shocked some fans who thought she was working towards recovery. In March 2017, Lovato was celebrating six years of remaining sober. Unfortunately, the singer had a relapse several months later. She released a song called “Sober” to express that and apologized to her parents. In part of the lyrics, Lovato admitted, “I wanna be a role model, but I’m only human.” The song lyrics also mentioned “I promise I’ll get help” and Lovato apologized to herself.
There have been sources close to the singer who mentioned that there were signs she was not doing well with her sobriety lately. Luck was on Lovato’s side in this instance as her friends were nearby and acted quickly. Hopefully Lovato is able to get the help she needs to get back on track with her sobriety and health.
