Many men spend their Saturday mornings reading the newspaper and sipping coffee. However, one group of men has decided that they are spending their Saturdays working on their health. The name of the group is Black Men Run. Maclin Williams is the leader of the running club.
Maclin stated that running is not the main goal of this club. The purpose of this club is to promote wellness and health in the black community. The group meets at 10 a.m. ever Saturday at Blacklick Woods-Metro Park. Anyone who wants to participate can. However, they want to encourage more black men to exercise because of the high rates of heart disease.
Maclin decided to become active in 2011 after he underwent a procedure for his heart. He started to run, and it changed his life. Maclin moved to Columbus in 2012. His son was born in 2014. His father died from heart problems the same year.
Maclin used running to cope with the challenges of his life. He was heavily-involved in the running community Columbus, and he was motivated to start his own running club. Carl Voellemeck is a part of the Columbus Westside Running Club. He stated that Maclin is a strong advocate for health and wellness. He also stated that being around Maclin is inspiring.
Black Men Run has a no man left behind policy. No one runs by themselves. While the men run, they share stories of family, work and what is going on in their personal lives. The men stated that running is like therapy for them.
Tony Whitley is a 57-year-old participant in the group. He used to run marathons, but he was forced to stop when he developed knee problems. However, he does not let that stop h him.
Erich Henderson is another participant who has improved his health since joining the club. He has been able to lower his blood pressure and cholesterol. Will Chambers, who is also a part of the club, has noticed an improvement in his post-traumatic stress disorder symptoms.
Maclin stated that his main goal is to promote health and wellness.
