After nearly three decades of sticking strictly to the very successful formula of Corona and Corona Light, the popular Mexican beer currently held by Constellation Brands is getting a new version. Corona Premier boasts a new brewing recipe that Constellation Brands brewers explain gives this new beer a smoother taste than the traditional and light versions.
Even though both Corona and Corona Light are considered to be lighter than popular American lagers, Corona Premier appears to be even lighter. According to a report recently published by Fortune magazine, Corona Premier has a slight hint of a dry, fruity taste with just a touch of malt. This new beer packs less carbohydrates and calories than Corona and Corona Light.
Early reviews of Corona Premier at Beer Advocate are mostly positive among fans of light beers that have lower alcohol contents. The color and appearance are very similar to the original Corona, and the taste has thus far been reported to be exactly as described by Constellation Brands. Some beer drinkers who have visited Mexican resort towns such as Cozumel and Playa del Carmen explain that this beer is essentially the same as Corona Especial.
Corona is a Mexican lager that offers a richer taste than popular American brands such as Budweiser and Coors. In the beginning, Corona was a mainstay at Tex-Mex restaurants in the United States because it tends to pair well with this type of cuisine. After a strong decade of marketing along with professional boxing, beach sports, bikini contests, neighborhood soccer tournaments, and grilling competitions, Corona became a staple of the American beer scene. By the time Corona Light arrived on the market, its enthusiastic reception was almost expected.
The marketing plans for Corona Premier include campaigns that will be targeted towards Hispanic American males over the age of 35. Thus far, promotional efforts with Tex-Mex platters at chains such as TacoMac have been successful. Future efforts may include strategic internet ad placements on websites that feature digital content geared towards masculine interests. Since this is not a craft beer, it may not be too appealing to members of the Millennial Generation; it will resonate better among Hispanic Americans with young families.
As one of the most powerful beer brands in the United States and around the world, Corona has been gaining significant market share; in fact, this brand has been responsible for creating a thirst for other Mexican brands such as Modelo, Sol, Tecate, and Dos Equis.
