Emmerson Mnangagwa is set to replace Robert Mugabe as the president of Zimbabwe bringing to an end a reign that lasted for 37 years. Zimbabwean national parliament issued a statement yesterday saying that Emmerson Mnangagwa will be sworn in as president on Friday. Emmerson Mnangagwa seems to have the backing of the military, and he is 75-years-old. He will complete the term of the former president after he resigned yesterday. Zimbabwe will go to the polls next August where they will elect a new president and new parliamentarians. The ousted vice president had been in exile in South Africa after he was sacked by Mr. Mugabe on 6th November. He travelled to Harare yesterday, and this marked the first public appearance since his dismissal. While addressing supporters at the headquarters of the ruling party, Emmerson Mnangagwa congratulated the party leaders for engineering a constitutional process that allowed the people of Zimbabwe to get to the current position. He said that the latest events would help the country make a new start in democracy. It’s also a sign that the will of the people had reigned. During the speech, he requested the people of the nation to unite. He also promised that he would ensure that the country collaborates with other nations outside of Africa. Zimbabwe has become a no-go zone for western countries.
Emmerson Mnangagwa has become an army favorite including Gen. Constantino Chiwenga who happens to be a top military commander. The last time that Mr. Mugabe was seen in public is on Sunday. He decided to offer his letter of resignation some few hours before the parliament began impeaching him. The former president is being held under a house arrest by the military. To ensure that the power takeover is not seen as a coup, Emmerson Mnangagwa and his allies have portrayed the takeover as having followed the constitution. According to the Zimbabwean constitution, the ruling party has been allowed to appoint an individual to stand in as the president if the previous holder has been evicted. However, real-world events have been influenced by the actions of the military. For instance, human rights groups and legal experts argue that the military has arrested people. At the same time, they have arrested Mr. Mugabe as well as people who oppose Emmerson Mnangagwa. In the real world, the military is not allowed to arrest people. The party has been accused of ensuring there is constitutionality and legality in their dealings.
