Sports can be a great way to connect with men. It’s also a universal language that everyone understands. Many young men find it easier to talk about sports than other topics. Others go even deeper and discuss statistics, scrutinizing everything that sports team management and coaching staff should have done or addressed.
However, bro-to-bro talk about sports can easily turn into a competition. When discussing sports with other men, it’s important to keep the conversation friendly. Your bro is your friend, so you both must come out of the conversation feeling good. Here are some tips on making sure your bro-to-bro talk about sports stays friendly:
Don’t bring up your team
You might think it’s cool to mention how well your team is doing, but it isn’t. If you do this, you might as well just be saying, “my team is better than yours,” to the other guy. This will put him on the defensive and make the conversation much less fun for you.
It’s okay to mention your team, but only if both of you belong to the same team. For example, if you’re both fans of the Dallas Cowboys, it’s fine to talk about how your team is doing. But if you are fans of different teams, it’s best to keep the conversation focused on the players and the game itself.
Don’t be a jerk
You are the only person who can make your bro-to-bro talk about sports a bad experience. If you rudely interrupt him or if you’re not interested in what he has to say, he’s going to get annoyed.
If your friend is talking about a game and you want to know more about it, ask him about it. Don’t interrupt him in the middle of his sentence, and don’t change the subject before he finishes talking. Remember, this is all about having fun.
Don’t brag
It might be tempting to brag when you have something good happen with your team, but this will only upset your friend and make him feel bad if you don’t belong to the same team. Instead of bragging, tell the other guy it was a good game and leave it at that. You don’t need to make everything into a competition.
Respect each other
Even if you have different sports teams, you can still be friends. You can still talk about sports and have fun together. Remember that this is a conversation between two people, not two teams. If you respect each other and keep things friendly, you’ll make the best of your bro-to-bro talk about sports.
