It’s no secret that the cannabis industry is booming. Businesses have seen an increase in customers due to the legalization of cannabis in many countries. Additionally, cannabis is a natural treatment for a variety of medical conditions. Thus, it’s no surprise that many people ask for weed to be legalized. Here are reasons why weed legalization should happen:
- Tax Revenue
Some governments want to legalize marijuana because they see tax revenue as a way to help fund their government services and programs. In fact, Colorado collected over 200 million dollars from taxes on pot sales alone in 2021. Even California could make approximately 14 billion dollars annually if they decided to legalize and regulate marijuana. This money would go towards funding education, healthcare, and other important needs in the state. However, there would still be a lot of money left over after all expenses were paid. Some believe legalized marijuana will lead to even more tax revenue than currently exists today.
- Lower Crime Rates and Better Law Enforcement
Many communities and states with existing legal marijuana businesses experience lower crime rates. This can be attributed to better law enforcement, less violence, and greater public safety when compared to illegal drug dealers. Also, legalizing marijuana allows the government to control how much is grown and sold so that dangerous drugs like opioids aren’t produced by legitimate growers who may sell their products illegally.
- Fewer Unnecessary Medical Treatments
According to research by RAND Corporation, about half of Americans age 12 and older say that using marijuana for medical purposes helped them. Although some patients use the plant for recreational purposes, most people turn to medical marijuana to treat issues like glaucoma, epilepsy, MS, cancer, PTSD, arthritis, and AIDS-related illnesses. Interestingly enough, many people find that marijuana works better than pharmaceutical treatments at managing certain types of symptoms. For example, one study found that individuals who used smokable marijuana had fewer side effects than those taking Marinol, a synthetic form of THC.
- Reduced Drug Abuse and Addiction
Cannabis has been proven to be a safer alternative to other drugs such as alcohol or opioids. Another reason people seek out marijuana for medical purposes is to avoid dependence on addictive substances and harmful habits. Anecdotal reports also show that the plant helps reduce cravings for other addictive drugs. One individual noted that he stopped using cocaine for the first time since high school when he was prescribed medicinal marijuana to treat chronic pain. He said that his tolerance for the drug dropped significantly after smoking weed. Therefore, if marijuana was legalized, it could potentially prevent addiction to other drugs in society.
In conclusion, there are many benefits of legalizing medicinal marijuana. It would provide health care coverage for millions of citizens who need it.
