Many people drink beer without really knowing what it is, why they like it, or what makes it different from other alcoholic drinks. We’ll try to answer these questions based on the things we know about beer drinking habits and trends.
The most important thing to know about beer is that there are different styles of beers – each one with their own alcohol content, style of brewing, and taste. These are lagers, ales and wheat beers.
There are a few more things to know about beer (that we’ll address later on), but before that, let’s look at how different beer types compare with the others.
The three main beer types differ mainly in terms of flavour. Really, there isn’t much difference between lagers and ales. Both of these beer styles use yeast for fermentation instead of the bacterial fermentation for which wine is known [1].
Lager beers are lighter and crisper, ale beers are heavier and more full-bodied [2] . What makes the difference during the brewing process is where different yeasts, heat and cold temperatures are used during the fermentation.
Lagers, or bottom-fermented beer, is brewed using cold fermentation. This method was developed by a Bavarian brewer named Gabriel Sedlmayr in 1839. The cold fermentation process is slow and the yeast used during the process doesn’t do any forming of esters, which are those flavourful compounds that give beer its flavor [3].
The second type of beer, ales or top-fermented beer, uses warm fermentation. The fermentation process was invented by Dutch and British brewers hundreds of years ago [4].
During the warm fermentation process, yeast produces more esters. Esters are responsible for ale beers’ richer, fuller taste.
Wheat beers are a hybrid of lager and ale. They are brewed by mixing wheat with lager or ale yeast during fermentation without changing the brewing process.
Why is beer good? And what makes it different from other alcoholic drinks?
Beer isn’t healthy, but it isn’t bad either. It can be considered as an alcoholic drink [5]. There’s not much you should be worried about while drinking beer, unless you have a history of alcohol addiction [6] and you’re pregnant [7] .
It also isn’t addictive and alcoholics who drink beer usually have lower chances of turning to alcohol addiction [8]. That’s why you might have heard that beer can help cure alcoholism. It’s true, but you’ll have to rely on your willpower next time you crave alcoholic beverages.
Alcohol itself is a depressant, which means it reduces the inhibitions of your body and brain. That’s why people who drink more than two drinks every day are called “drunkards.
