In the NBA, Milwaukee Bucks’ star Giannis Antetokounmpo goes by the nickname “Greek Freak” due to his size, pure athletic abilities, and impressive basketball skills. Basically, he’s a freak of nature, and that has him doing amazing things on the hardwood. It also has him vying for the NBA MVP Award in the early part of the latest season.
However, Giannis recently mentioned that he doesn’t like to work out with other star players. Often times during the offseason, NBA stars will link up and train together over the summer. That’s a no-go for Giannis, who even admitted he stays away from working out with greats in the game today such as LeBron James or Kevin Durant.
As reported by Hot New Hip Hop, Giannis told The Athletic’s Eric Nehm the reasons why he won’t participate in those training sessions. One of them is that he prefers adversity. Another reason is that he feels strange playing with them during the summer and then against them in the regular season. He told The Athletic, “It feels weird. It doesn’t feel right with me.”
However, another reason may make even more sense. Giannis mentioned that he feels when LeBron and Kevin Durant worked out it may have helped with gathering intelligence. As Greek Freak elaborated saying he believes Durant would “Take a lot of his thoughts and use it against him,” with regards to King James. Basically, Giannis doesn’t want players getting that chance to evaluate his strengths and weaknesses up close.
Giannis Antetokounmpo is now in his seventh season in the league, and it could be his best so far. He’s averaging 26.8 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, and 57.7 percent field goal shooting for the season. Not only that, his Milwaukee Bucks are considered one of the top tier teams in the Eastern Conference, and depending on how healthy they stay, a tough matchup in the NBA playoffs.
In addition to his concept of not working out with fellow superstars in the league, he’s also a super competitive player. In fact, he’s so competitive that he’s promised a special treat for the player who dunked on him and then stepped over him on the court in New York. Mario Hezonja was put on notice for a possible punch to the groin on Christmas Day, per a USA Today report.
All that said, it shows that the competitive nature and training habits of Giannis Antetokounmpo are what helps make him the “Freak” of a player he is today.
