Several weeks ago, the Los Angeles Lakers finally pulled off the blockbuster trade they wanted by bringing Anthony Davis to the roster from the New Orleans Pelicans. It officially created a pairing of LeBron James and Davis in an attempt to get the Lakers back into the postseason. As a sign of his gratitude towards Davis joining the team, LeBron even agreed to give him the No. 23 to wear for his Lakers jersey in the coming season.
Not so fast, though. According to a recent ESPN report, that is now on hold due to “production and financial issues.” ESPN’s Dave McMenamin confirmed the information which was initially part of a Yahoo Sports report regarding LeBron getting the No. 6 for his jersey this season. James wore No. 23 last season with the Lakers, but Davis also wore the number for the New Orleans Pelicans over the past seven seasons he played there.
LeBron was attempting to use a number he’s used several times before in his career. He wore the No. 6 during his playing days with the Miami Heat, where he won two championships. He also wore that number for Team USA during the Olympics.
With the news of the issues with the No. 6, Anthony Davis decided to use a different jersey number in the meantime. According to his Instagram post, Davis will wear the No. 3, which he mentions in the post’s caption was his elementary school number. Davis is all smiles in that photo which shows him wearing the No. 3 Lakers jersey, so it seems the problem may be solved for now.
Meanwhile, he’s looking forward to a successful season. The Lakers will officially introduce Anthony Davis at a press conference on Saturday in El Segundo, California, with LeBron James expected to be in attendance for the event. Most likely, Davis will show off that new Lakers jersey for a few photo opportunities.
In the past weeks, not only was Davis traded to the Lakers, but he was also unveiled as the NBA 2K20 video game cover athlete. In a recent NBA 2K20 tweet, they mentioned that the new Lakers star will help them reveal their upcoming game’s player ratings on a live stream. That will take place on Monday, July 15.
