On Saturday night, the Oklahoma City Thunder hosted the Golden State Warriors in what some might have considered a close matchup. It was one some people might consider even closer when the announcement that Kevin Durant was out of action came through, but that wasn’t the case. It was a frustrating night for Russell Westbrook, as he struggled to score, and his team was blown out.
Westbrook also racked up a noteworthy technical foul. According to NBA.com, Westbrook received his 16th technical foul of the current NBA season. Per NBA rules, once a player gets that 16th technical, they face a mandatory one-game suspension. That means the NBA will review the call first and then make an announcement. In all likelihood, Westbrook will be sitting out OKC’s upcoming game against the Miami Heat.
The referee gave Westbrook the technical during the second quarter of the Saturday game. On the play, Westbrook had a shot block in the lane by Klay Thompson. Westbrook felt he was fouled on the play and didn’t get the call from the referee. Instead, his frustration resulted in him running into Klay Thompson body-to-body and then saying something to the referee. It’s unknown what Westbrook said, but the referee wasn’t having it and assessed the technical.
A Twitter video post shows the replay. Klay Thompson was all smiles after it went down too. Some may feel Thompson fouled Westbrook, or possibly baited him into the technical. Either way, it was clear Thompson was amused as he chuckled about Westbrook’s antics. DeMarcus Cousins appeared to be finding humor in it too. Later on, another play showed Westbrook rush into Kevin Looney with a stiff arm, before the ref blew the whistle. Looney also laughed at Westbrook’s frustration.
When all was said and done, the Oklahoma City Thunder got served a humiliating 110-88 home loss. In addition, Russell Westbrook will serve a one-game suspension. That mean’s he’ll have to watch from elsewhere as his team hosts the Miami Heat on Monday night.
