Twilight star Robert Pattinson gave his first interview after being cast as Bruce Wayne/Batman in Matt Reeves’s The Batman. Speaking with Variety, Pattinson described the first time he put on the Batsuit, saying that the experience was both “transformative” and one of the most bizarre things he’s ever done in his filmmaking career. While saying that he felt powerful and tough when wearing the costume, Pattinson conceded that he nevertheless felt a little silly, particularly because it took the aid of several people for him to actually get into the suit.
Pattinson also described how being in the suit changed the way he planned to approach the character, feeling that some of things he originally intended to bring to the character might not be easy in the confining costume. Luckily, Pattinson was filming Tenet, a new project helmed by Christopher Nolan, when he learned that he had landed the part of Batman. Nolan previously directed the celebrated Dark Knight Trilogy, which was released from 2005 to 2012. In celebrating the news on set, Pattinson got advice from Nolan on tricks to move in the suit. Although excited for the part, Pattinson knew that his casting might be controversial, particularly because he rose to fame in the critically panned Twilight series. Pattinson confessed to Variety that the fan response to news that he would be playing the next Batman was less severe than he originally anticipated, although he added that he was also very unhappy that news of his casting was leaked before the release of an official statement by the studio.
Pattinson was coy when asked if he would be playing the Caped Crusader in other films after completing The Batman. Soon after he was cast, reports indicated that the actor had signed a multipicture deal with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, and that The Batman would be the first part of a new trilogy. Pattinson said that as of now, he is just taking things scene-by-scene and will determine if he will continue playing the character in other films at a later date.
The Batman is scheduled to premiere on June 25, 2021.
