One of the biggest surprises in the 2019 Major League Baseball season has been the great play of the Minnesota Twins. They were a terrible team last year. That resulted in manager Paul Molitor being fired. Rocco Baldelli was hired to replace him and he has done a great job in his first year at the helm. The Twins now have a 3 1/2 gave lead on the Cleveland Indians. The Twins have been able to do this mainly on the strength of their offense. They have led all of baseball in home runs for the entire season. They are on pace to break the record for most home runs hit in a season set by the New York Yankees last year.
The Indians are not going away quietly. They have played very well despite many injuries to some of their most important players. For example, two-time Cy Young Award winner Corey Kluber broke his arm and has missed most of the season. The Twins are in a very good position to hold off the Indians because they have a very easy schedule the rest of the way. The Twins will start a four game series with the Detroit Tigers on Friday. The Tigers are one of the worst teams in baseball and they will certainly lose 100 games.
The big concern for the Minnesota Twins is their pitching. As all baseball fans know, good pitching always stops good hitting in the playoffs. The Twins did not add a starting pitcher at the trading deadline. This could hurt them in the playoffs if they eventually get there. The Indians will need to play very well the rest of the way in order to overtake the Twins for the division lead. Cleveland will start a series with Tampa Bay on Friday. The Rays are also in the thick of the wild card race in the American League with both Cleveland and Oakland.
The Twins defeated the Chicago White Sox on Thursday afternoon by a score of 10-5. Therefore, they were able to keep their lead in the division as the Indians were beating the Tigers by a score of 2-0. The Twins feel like this is their year. Everything has gone right for them so far. They have played far beyond expectations. Now all that remains is for the team to do well in the playoffs when October rolls around.
