The team with the best record in baseball is the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, the Philadelphia Phillies came back to beat the Dodgers for the second time in the past three days. It was four runs in the bottom of the seventh inning that did the trick for the Phillies this time. They eventually won the game by a score of 7-6. Aaron Nola had another poor start for the Phillies in what has been a very disappointing season for him. He gave up four earned runs in five innings. However, the bullpen of the Dodgers let them down again.
The two losses that the Dodgers have suffered against the Phillies during the past three days are not going to mean very much in terms of the National League East race. The Dodgers look like they have that division locked up unless they suffer a collapse of epic proportions. However, these wins were very important to the Phillies. They have not played well during the first half of the season. They are only a few games over .500 and well behind the Atlanta Braves who are leading the National League East. There was a lot expected of the Phillies this year after the signing of Bryce Harper. However, the team has not even come close to those expectations.
There is still plenty of time for the Phillies to get back in the playoff race, reports MLB.com. They have half the season to work with. However, they will need to start playing better on a consistent basis if they are going to make the playoffs. The good news for the Phillies is that they have a pair of wild card spots that can also get them into the playoffs. They don’t have to worry about catching the Braves to get in.
The Dodgers know that their amazing first half has given them a very big cushion. All they have to do is play average baseball for the second half of the season and they will be able to coast into the playoffs. Dodger manager Dave Roberts said after the game on Thursday that he is still very happy with where his team is at the moment. He realizes that even the best teams are going to blow leads late in games on occasion. He just hopes that his team does not make a habit of doing that during the second half of the season.
