Two of the best teams in Major League Baseball in 2019 played against each other on Friday night at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx. The New York Yankees and the Minnesota Twins squared off in a contest that has been highly anticipated. Most people expected the Yankees to be a good team this year. After all, they won 100 games last year. However, the start to the season for the Twins has been a bit of a surprise for fans and media members alike. The Twins played very poorly last year. In fact, their disappointing 2018 season led to the firing of manager Paul Molitor.
This year, the Twins seem to be firing on all cylinders. They are both among the league leaders in many of the hitting and pitching categories. On Friday night, the Yankees beat the Twins by a score of 6-3 in front of 36,000 fans. James Paxton got the start for the Yankees. He was not around for very long. He hit the showers early. However, it was not because he pitched poorly. On the contrary, he did not allow a single earned run. He suffered a knee injury that caused Yankees manager Aaron Boone to remove him from the game for precautionary reasons.
The bullpen for the Yankees came up very big in this game. They held the Twins to only a pair of runs in six innings of relief work. Aroldis Chapman pitched a scoreless inning in the ninth to wrap up the game and secure the win for the Yankees. Aaron Boone said that injuries are just a part of the game of baseball. There is nothing you can do to avoid them. It is just a matter of making the most of what you have when the injuries happen. Boone said that they will have to wait and see how serious the injury is to Paxton’s knee. Then they can decide which moves they should make.
Gary Sanchez was the offensive star for the Yankees in this game. He crushed two very long home runs. Those were two of his three hits in the game. Both of his home runs came when there were no runners on base. Sanchez is developing into a true star. Boone feels that the sky is the limit for Sanchez. The key will be him staying healthy for an extended period of time. He has had trouble doing that in the past.
