It is no secret that the New York Mets have had very big problems with their starting pitchers so far this season. In fact, only the Milwaukee Brewers have had their starting pitchers perform worse in 2019. Both of these teams played each other at Citi Field on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Mets, it was yet another bad performance by a starting pitcher. Noah Syndergaard was the culprit this time. He gave up five earned runs on 10 hits in only five innings of work to take the loss and drop to 1-3 this season. He also surrendered a pair of home runs. Ben Gamel and Christian Yelich did the yard work for the Brew Crew.
On the other hand, the Brewers got a terrific starting performance from Brandon Woodruff. He pitched five innings and give up six hits. However, only one run crossed the plate for the Mets. The Brewers eventually won the game by a score of 8-6. Woodruff picked up his third win of the year against one defeat. Milwaukee got off to a very hot start to the season. However, both their pitching the hitting have faltered. They are still a respectable 15-13. However, many experts believe that the Brewers are much more talented than their record indicates.
The home run by Christian Yelich was a historic one. It was his 14th long ball of the season. Only the great Alex Rodriguez and Albert Pujols have hit that many home runs before the start of May. Yelich won the most valuable player award in the National League last year. It seems like he is the favorite to win the award again after the first month of the season. Obviously, there are still five months to go. There is still a lot of baseball yet to be played. Yelich was asked about his home run after the game. He said he was honored to be in the same company as Pujols and Rodriguez.
The Mets have a 13-13 record. There are only a few people in the national media who think that the Mets are going to still be in the playoff race by September. There are a lot of things that will need to go right for that to happen. A lot will depend on how well the other teams in the National League East perform. Most of the experts think that Atlanta is the class of the division.
