It looks like the NFC East is going to go down to the wire. The Dallas Cowboys currently lead the division with a 7-5 record. However, the Philadelphia Eagles are now tied with the Washington Redskins for second place. Both teams have identical 6-6 records as a result of the Eagles defeating the Redskins by a score of 28-13 on Monday night at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. The game was not the only loss the Redskins suffered on Monday night. They also had another player suffer a devastating injury. QB Colt McCoy broke his ankle. He will not be able to play again this year. McCoy had been the backup QB for the Redskins. Their starting QB had been Alex Smith. He also suffered a broken leg a couple of weeks ago.
The loss of McCoy meant that newly acquired Mark Sanchez was forced into action. Sanchez had been a starting QB in the NFL for several years for the New York Jets. However, he became prone to throwing interceptions and found himself relegated to backup status. He has bounced around a few teams for the past several years as a backup. Washington brought him in a couple of weeks ago to serve as a backup to Colt McCoy after Alex Smith broke his leg and was done for the year.
The Redskins briefly took a 10-7 lead in this game after an electrifying 90-yard run by Adrian Peterson. It was the longest run from scrimmage in the history of the Redskins. However, it was all downhill after that. The Eagles took over the game with QB Carson Wentz easily leading his team down the field on several scoring drives. The Redskins defense offered almost no resistance.
Not surprisingly, Mark Sanchez did not look good during his time at QB for Washington. This is understandable because he had not started an NFL game in a few years. He has not had a lot of time to learn the Redskins playbook because he was only signed a couple of weeks ago. It is not clear how many snaps Sanchez received with the first team in practice this week.
The Eagles definitely have a leg up on the Redskins for the remainder of the season. It seems unlikely that Mark Sanchez will be able to perform well enough to guide the Redskins to the playoffs. They would need to win their remaining four games.
