One of the most impressive teams in the NFL this year has been the New Orleans Saints. They have only lost only one game so far this season. That was their first game of the season against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Since then, they have been able to reel off nine wins in a row. They now have a record of 9-1 and a three game lead on the Carolina Panthers in their division. They are tied with the Los Angeles Rams and the Kansas City Chiefs for the best record in the NFL. The Saints now have their sights set on having the best record overall which would guarantee them home field advantage throughout the playoffs.
The game on Sunday against the Philadelphia Eagles at the Superdome was never close. The Saints piled up the points as they have done so often this year. The final score was 48-7. The Saints were able to score this many points after scoring more than 50 against the Cincinnati Bengals last week. They truly have one of the most potent offenses in the game. Saints head coach Sean Payton received some criticism after the game because it seemed like he was running up the score when the outcome of the game was already decided. However, he denied this accusation. He just said he was trying to win the football game.
Eagles QB Carson Wentz had what was probably his worst game in the NFL. He was intercepted a total of three times during the game. He was never able to get into a steady rhythm with any of his receivers. The Eagles defense did not have any luck trying to stop future Hall of Famer Drew Brees and the high octane Saints offense. They basically moved up and down the field at will. They could have scored even more than 48 points if they had really tried. Brees became the all-time NFL leader in passing yards earlier this season.
The loss for the Eagles put them at 4-6. They are in dire straits right not because of all the injuries they have sustained to their secondary. They are now being forced to play guys who are on their practice squad and preseason roster. There is a very good possibility that the defending Super Bowl champion Eagles will not make the playoffs this year. Their only realistic chance is to win all six of their remaining games.
