When Red Bull sponsors an athlete, this usually doesn’t mean they are helping a quarterback make it to the Super Bowl. If Red Bull is sponsoring an athlete, someone is probably jumping off a cliff with a squirrel suit or doing a double backflip on a tandem bike. One of the most extreme projects that Red Bull has sponsored to date is Ross Edgley’s nearly 2,000-mile long journey to circumnavigate Britan while swimming. This makes Edgley the first known swimmer to successfully complete this swimming trip.
This is not a journey that was for the faint of heart. Edgley has not been ashore since he set off on his journey in a small boat with his small crew on June 1st of this year. This journey took 150 days and consisted of nothing more than swimming for six to 12 hours, eating, sleeping, and occasionally filming videos to share his journey online. From jellyfish stings to extreme rashes, Edgley endured all of the obstacles of the sea to complete a swimming feat that many thought would be humanly impossible.
According to The Guardian, this journey and his other swimming accomplishments have helped Edgley gain over a quarter million followers on Instagram. He has documented his journey regularly on social media creating a solid following for himself. Many of his followers have asked Edgley how he got the idea to swim around Britan. This idea was given to him by a Marine when he was joining them in a 48-hour long swim. One of the Marines suggested that he circumnavigate Britan and of course he thought it was a good idea.
When asked, Edgley told reporters that after swimming for five months straight, his goal was to learn to walk again. It will be exciting to see what amazing feat Edgley thinks up next. Red Bull will most likely be the sponsor on board for the next extreme Edgley project.
