President of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige spoke to Entertainment Weekly recently about what Carol Danvers, also known as Captain Marvel, will bring to future films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. As fans of the long-running film franchise know, Avengers: Infinity War ended with superspy Nick Fury sending a distress call to Captain Marvel in the film’s post credits scene. While not much is known about March’s Captain Marvel film or the currently untitled Avengers 4, industry insiders have revealed that Captain Marvel will be a character with power levels unrivaled in any of the series’ past films. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Feige confirmed this piece of information, saying, “She is more powerful than any character we have introduced thus far.” Feige went on to explain that her presence in Avengers 4 will drastically shift the balance of power in the film, giving the Avengers the muscle they need to take on supervillain Thanos.
Feige also hinted that Carol Danvers might assume leadership of the Avengers following Avengers 4. Rumors continue to abound that longtime franchise stars Chris Evans, who plays Captain America, and Robert Downey Jr., who plays Iron Man, might exit the series following the film. As both characters are usually seen as head of the superhero group, their exits will leave a hole in the team’s leadership that might be filled by Captain Marvel. The studio has revealed very little about their plans for the franchise following Avengers 4, but in addition to Captain Marvel, speculation centers around Chadwick Bosman’s Black Panther and Tom Holland’s Spider-Man taking center stage in the franchise’s main storylines.
Despite the excitement for finally seeing Captain Marvel on the big screen, fans still want to know why she was absent from Marvel’s past films. As revealed in a synopsis from Marvel Studios, Captain Marvel takes place in the 90s, and sees Carol Danvers joining an elite alien team called Starforce. Ben Mendelsohn, who plays Talos, leader of an alien race called the Skrulls and the film’s major villain, gave insight into why Danvers was not present for any of the events of the past films in the series. In his own interview with Entertainment Weekly, Mendelsohn says that after the events of Captain Marvel, Danvers will have been put through the ringer and need time to recover from her experiences. Captain Marvel premieres March 9, 2019. Avengers 4 opens later that year on May 3.
