Watching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers was a necessity for any male child who grew up in the 90s, and fans are still clambering today to get their fix of the multicolored superheroes. Those still in love with the series got a burst of excitement early this week when original Red Ranger Austin St. John said that he was up for a reunion movie. The announcement comes in the wake of Hasbro buying the rights to the series earlier this year and original Blue Ranger David Yost saying that he was already in the process of writing the script for a reunion movie. For St. John, the most important factor in returning to the series is a good script. Having just started meeting fans at conventions following his service as a military paramedic, St. John feel that if the story justifies his participation, he will gladly be a part of the film. St. John has expressed confidence that Yost can deliver a story that fans will find engaging.
According to comicbook.com, the concept of a reunion movie had been simmering in Yost’s mind for several years. A frequent guest of comic and entertainment conventions, the actor turned producer is impressed by the passion fans of the original series still have for the show. While Yost did not give away any plot points, he said that the new movie will show what the original team members are up to following their lives as Power Rangers. The story will also be respectful to the memory of Thuy Trang, the original Yellow Ranger, who died in 2001. Yost added that chances are highly likely that the film will be produced, pointing out that Hasbro sees the Power Rangers franchise as a very important asset.
In addition to St. John and Yost, other cast members of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers have expressed an interest in a reunion movie. Jason David Frank, who played the original Green Ranger, said he would gladly be part of a reunion movie earlier this month at San Diego Comic Con. Frank added that, should the film go forward, original Pink Ranger Amy Jo Johnson should be in the director’s chair. Johnson, who has been directing since 2013, has also expressed an interest in a Power Rangers reunion film. Walter Jones, who played the Black Ranger, is the only original cast member who has yet to comment on if he would be willing to be part of a reunion film.
