When playing The Open, professional golfers have to deal with links style golf and unpredictable weather. For the golfers this year at Carnoustie, they also had to deal with firm burned out fairways that were almost running faster than the greens. It was amazing to see golfers like Woods, Spieth, and McIlroy doing so well over the four days at this tournament. However, it was Molinari who battled it out to win with a -8 for the tournament. This goes to show that Francesco Molinari really can perform well under pressure.

With a final round of 69, Molinari showed that the windy conditions weren’t going to affect his golf game. He started the day with a six-way tie that was hard to break away from. With names like Spieth in this tie, it seemed as though the 35-year-old professional golfer may be beaten by the younger rock star golf generation. Molinari didn’t have a very great start but had this to say about his performance. “The course bit me a few times in the first two days, but to go bogey-free around this track at the weekend is incredible.”

Ranked at 15th in the world currently, Molinari now has the media’s attention. It will be interesting to see how he performs in tournaments to come. With Woods gaining major media attention by finally honing in his game once again, it may have been difficult for Molinari to tune this out and focus on his goal at hand. The absence of bogeys put Molinari into a very strong scoring position which many of his competitors were too far behind.

Over all of social media, fellow professional golfers were congratulating the amazing performance of this clutch golfer. It is great to see such a light-hearted and positive golfer take the win in such an important major.

Seeing less-known golfers like Tony Finau, Eddie Pepperell, and Thorbjorn Olsen finish in the top 15 was a great compliment to Molinari being the first Italian to win a major. Golf is an amazing sport where the leaderboards can be stunning and exciting week to week. It will be fun to watch the likes of Finau and Molinari in the coming weeks as they have now secured a lot of points in the race for the coveted FedEx Cup. The next few weeks will be very interesting to watch as big names like Dustin Johnson and Justin Thomas may have to really fight to stay in contention for the FedEx Cup.
