Gynecomastia is a condition that causes the glandular tissue in a man’s chest to enlarge. It is estimated that 30 percent of men have breasts. That is why more men are opting to get breast reduction surgery.
It is estimated that 1.3 million men got a breast reduction in 2017. This is a 30 percent increase from 2000. Not only are more men getting breast reduction, but they are also getting other cosmetic procedures. The number of men getting liposuction has increased by 23 percent. The number of men getting tummy tucks has increased by 12 percent.
Most of the men who are getting cosmetic surgery are between the ages of 20 and 29. In fact, they account for 35 percent of the men who are getting cosmetic surgery. There are several things that are contributing to the rise in plastic surgery. Social media is one of those factors.
The stigma associated with men getting plastic surgery has also been erased. Jeffrey Janis is the president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons. He stated that people see that their friends, family and colleagues look and feel better after getting plastic surgery. That is why they are more open to getting it themselves.
Dr. Janis stated that the reason more men are getting gynecomastia surgery is because this condition is more common. Gynecomastia is often caused by a hormonal imbalance. It can be triggered by low testosterone and high levels of estrogen. Obesity, marijuana use and steroid use can cause a hormonal imbalance.
Many men are able to treat their condition with prescription medication or losing weight. However, some men need to get surgery because it is a permanent solution.
The surgeon will make an incision and remove the excess fat and tissue from the breast. Scarring, nipple sensitivity, infection and bleeding are some of the potential risks. However, the benefits will outweigh the potential risks for most patients. It has a high success and satisfaction rate.
